Windermere Families,
March is here, and with it comes a burst of energy and excitement at Windermere Elementary. We're looking forward to a month filled with engaging learning experiences, fun activities, and family time during our Spring Break (Friday, March 13- Friday, March 20).
As we move into the spring months, I encourage all students to continue to strive for their best. We are proud of the progress they are making and excited to see what they will accomplish in the coming weeks. Our FAST end-of-year testing will start in early April for fourth and fifth grade (Writing), and then all students will take their Reading and Math end-of-year assessments in early May. We still have a lot of work to do to ensure our students are well-prepared and shine at their brightest. We are confident that our teachers have a strong plan in place to support students who are still working on various standards and to ensure they meet grade-level requirements.
Thank you to our dedicated teachers and staff for their hard work, and our supportive parents and guardians for your partnership.

Sincerely,
Janet Bittick, Principal

Dear Kindergarten Families,
Exciting things are happening in kindergarten! We had an educational visit from Smiles & Co. where we learned about the importance of dental hygiene and how to care for our teeth and how to choose healthy foods. We are celebrating the end of the marking period with Field Day fun as we exercise our bodies and get strong.
Everyone is looking forward to a relaxing Spring Break when we can recharge our minds and bodies to finish the year strong.
In April, we are looking forward to our final field trip to the Orlando Family Stage to see Finding Nemo! This will be a great opportunity to help us understand story elements such as characters, setting, events, and dialogue.
We are so proud of our kindergarten students and all that they have learned, but it's not over yet! Students can practice all short vowel words, irregular words, addition and subtraction math facts, counting to 100, counting by tens and writing their names correctly. Now is a great time to do some extra Lexia Core 5 practice on Classlink. Students can access this with their student number and password (YYYYMMDD). Check your child’s binder for login information.

March has been a busy month for our first graders. First grade was so excited to have students from WOHS come and read and discuss stories that they wrote in their creative writing class.
All students participated in the annual WES Field Day Event! Coach Caskey did a fantastic job of organizing fun stations for the children to test their skills using hula hoops, climbing obstacle courses, pulling ropes in a tug-a-war competition, and many other fun activities. We had an awesome D.J. to keep the day moving and the children enjoyed popsicles to cool off from the heat!
The students finished up their unit of Prose and Poetry in Reading (moral of the story, who is telling the story, retelling, descriptive words and phrases). In Math, they worked on measurement using inches and centimeters. In Science, they learned about plants. In Social Studies, they learned about how families change over time.

In Reading, second graders are reading poems, fables, and short passages to identify onset rimes, similes, idioms, and alliteration. This unit culminated in our third “Dress Up Like an Idiom Day!” Students were quite creative and had a lot of fun.
In Math, students are adding and subtracting within 1,000. Students will add using place value models and partial sums.
In Science, students were introduced to facts that told the functions of the heart, lungs, muscles, skeleton, and stomach.
In Social Studies, students continue to learn about the Native American culture.

We had so much fun on our Walk to Windermere field trip. Learning all about our local, state, and federal government and experiencing examples of local government in our everyday lives.
For reading, students are now spiraling back through their fiction and poetry units working on character development, theme and summarizing. Students are also working on an argumentative essay on volunteering. For science, we are learning about Earth and space in time. Finally, in social studies we are beginning to work on providing public services. Students can still continue practicing their multiplication facts and doing Reading Plus over break.

Hello Fourth Grade Families!
We had a wonderful learning day at the History Center! The kids were able to make connections to material we have covered in ELA and Social Studies!
|
Hello Fifth Grade Families!
We have a bunch of FUN activities coming up in 5th grade. We have both our annual Mustang Scrimmage 5th grade vs the Teachers fundraiser and our last field trip of elementary school… Islands of Adventure! It’s going to be an action-packed end of the school year.
In ELA, we are reviewing and making sure we work on the skills that each student needs.
In math, we only have two units left. We just started our unit on graphing and will finish the year out with our measurement and conversions unit.
In science, we are learning about adaptations. We also just took our last science PMA before the FAST. This test covers everything the students have learned in fifth grade except the adaptations unit since they haven’t learned that yet. The results will provide us with data to guide our instruction and review as we approach our science FAST test in May.
Yearbooks are on sale! Order forms were sent home. The deadline is April 10.

Students in Mrs. Tidmus' class were engineering tall stable towers! But, the challenge was to only use note cards! They came up with some very unique but successful models. The students learned important skills such as collaboration, engineering design process, and how not to give up! Science is about testing, retesting and analyzing your results. These students were definitely using critical thinking skills and having fun! |
